![]() CONCERT: SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2022, 3:00 PM James Stone, Trumpet Mary St. Laurent-Sheehan, Trumpet The Chamber Orchestra of Barrington at St. John’s, conducted by Edward Markward, presents the second concert of the season featuring trumpeters James Stone and Mary St. Laurent-Sheehan, members of the COBSJ, in Antonio Vivaldi’s popular Concerto for Two Trumpets in C major on Sunday, November 6 at 3 p.m. The concert opens with Dimitri Shostakovich’s aching Chamber Symphony in C Minor, op. 110A. The work, orchestrated by Rudolf Barshai with the composer’s blessing, is a reworking of Shostakovich’s autobiographical 8th String Quartet. The dedication written in the score reads: “In memory of the victims of fascism and war.” The concert concludes with W.A. Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G minor, K. 550, the middle of three symphonies (39, 40, 41) composed in the space of a few weeks during the summer of 1788. It is sometimes referred to as the "Great G minor symphony,” to distinguish it from the "Little G minor symphony,” No. 25. The work has elicited varying interpretations from critics. Robert Schumann regarded it as possessing "Grecian lightness and grace". Donald Tovey saw in it the character of opera buffa. Almost certainly, however, the most common perception today is that the symphony is tragic in tone and intensely emotional. Although interpretations differ, the symphony is unquestionably one of Mozart's most greatly admired works. COBSJ will adhere to all CDC and RI Department of Health regulations and recommendations for safely convening a concert during the Covid-19 pandemic. Mask wearing is recommended but not required. The concert is free, donations are welcome. ![]() Funding provided in part by a grant from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, through the Rhode Island Culture, Humanities, and Arts Recovery Grant (RI CHARG) program. NIROPE, Ron and Pete Cardis appeared with Dr. Edward Markward from The Chamber Orchestra of Barrington to discuss their upcoming Sunday, February 16th performance. Dr. Markward asked Ron and Pete to practice up, so he sent each a baton to practice conducting. Thank you for your generosity and good luck with the performance! |
